Wonder Drug

By Dr. Raquel Isabelle Donado

My skin weathered, darkened

No longer supple, soft, smooth

Life’s lines already hardened

People no longer stare, truth

Saw a young girl advertising and

I bought a bottle promising youth

At first I felt good, glowing, glam and

Then my skin bubbled, broke, uncouth

And my doctor said, disheartened

Which wonder drug must I sleuth?

Superwoman stroked out at age 84. Competent professor. Compassionate MD. A former head of 5 societies. Mother of 5 but everybody’s mom really. Now, with right-sided paralysis, spontaneous eye opening, PEG in place, no bed sore. Her expression is blank, and she closes her eyes when I stroke her hair.  So, I guess she’s okay…
