The 2022 Most Outstanding Residents in Internal Medicine

The Most Outstanding Resident in Internal Medicine (MORIM) AWARD is given in fulfillment of the PCP Mission of providing an environment that promotes ethical, high-quality, and cost-effective medical care; putting a premium on excellence, competence, and compassion; and putting service above gain.

MORIM Award is also given to achieve the PCP Thrusts of: Building a culture of professionalism and integrity, enabling and supporting trainees and examinees to meet standards. As well as to stimulate outstanding performance in Internal Medicine Residency in the Philippine setting by giving due recognition to and highlighting the outstanding accomplishments of current residents in training. This award started in 1991.

Here are the Top 5 among the 35 MORIM nominees nationwide


 Dr. Elrey P. Inocencio

Dr. Elrey P. Inocian, the 2022 Most Outstanding Resident in Internal Medicine from Perpetual Succour Hospital was so dedicated to his work and was adept in research that he surpassed the minimum requirements of the PCP by making 2 case reports and 2 original research studies before he became a senior resident. He has represented the Perpetual Succour Hospital Department of Internal Medicine in both local and international research conferences as the poster and oral presenter. He was able to publish his case report abstract in the International Journal of Rheumatologic Diseases and the full article through Elsevier in the Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine Journal, which can be accessed through PubMed. He also won twice in the PCP Most Outstanding Research 2020 and 2021. His clinical competence, effective communication skills and proficiency in teaching, and his good relationship with his fellow residents catapulted him to become the chief resident. He led his fellow residents by example and has left a legacy to the Department. He proved his excellent leadership and management skills when he was tasked to lead the vaccination drive of PSH while preparing the Department for the PCP accreditation.

 

 

Dr. Aaron Lemuel Y. Ong

Dr. Aaron Lemuel Y. Ong, the 2022 MORIM 1st runner-up from Chong Hua Hospital is an astute clinician and academic achiever (champion in quiz bowls, author of published research), and is constantly on the look-out for ways to maximize learning for his co-residents for which he was awarded the Docere award in teaching. Recognizing gaps in knowledge due to the pandemic, he spearheaded and came up with modules for Small Group Discussions to allow interactive discussions among consultants and fellow residents. Possessing ingenuity and organizational skills, he was entrusted as the prime mover to develop innovations in their department such as telemedicine process flow, vaccination drives, Covid mitigation measures, PPE provisions, preparations for accreditation, and RED postgraduate courses among others. He was at the forefront of community service programs and relief operations to benefit the community of Cebu.

 

 

Dr. Salahuddin C. Andam

Dr. Salahuddin C. Andam from Amai Pakpak Medical Center is the 2022 MORIM 2nd runner-up awardee, and also the Outstanding Resident in Community Service Award in recognition of his work and commitment to community service. Dr. Andam graduated as the Class Valedictorian of Mindanao State University College of Medicine and had his Postgraduate Internship at Philippine General Hospital. He decided to have his residency in Amai Pakpak Medical Center to serve the people greatly affected by the “Marawi siege”. Service to people is one of his priorities. He provided exceptional patient care regardless of the patient’s social status. He possessed leadership capabilities and served as the chief resident during his senior year. He was recognized as the best resident of Amai Pakpak Medical Center twice for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021). During his graduation ceremony, he was recognized as the Best Resident, and Best Researcher, and received the Leadership Awardee in their institution.

 

 

 

Dr. Denise Joy Emmanuelle C. Lopez

Dr. Denise Joy Emmanuelle C. Lopez, one of the 2022 MORIM Top Finalists, is from St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City. Dr. Lopez thrive as a trainee in an unprecedented period and her emotional and adversity quotients truly uplifted their department in the most difficult time of the pandemic. Given her impressive clinical and academic skills, dedication to serving the people, and humility, she was chosen as the chief resident of her department.

 

 

 

Dr. Gwen R. Marcellana

Dr. Gwen R. Marcellana, also one of the 2022 MORIM Top Finalists, is from St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City and has displayed excellence in providing care to her patients. She has a holistic approach, taking into account the well-being of the patient and their family, and has molded and guided her juniors in doing the same and treating them like family. As the Chief Resident for Academics, she has shown devotion to the study of Medicine, leading the department to victory in various academic competitions. Amidst the pandemic, she has shown decision-making in crafting flexible programs, such as the department’s annual Harrison’s Cup, that would stimulate her co-residents to strive for the best.
